Utah is famous for its “Mighty Five”, which are five different national parks scattered across the southern part of the state. There’s just so much beauty out here and it can feel like there isn’t enough time to see it all. From dramatic arches to epic mountain vistas to narrow slot canyons, and so much more, there’s just so much to see in this state. I’ve visited twice, but I’ve still barely scratched the surface of everything Utah has to offer.
Let’s start planning your trip to Utah!
Arches National Park
Home to hundreds of natural arches, Arches National Park is full of iconic scenery, including the famous Delicate Arch.
Bryce Canyon National Park
The canyon is great but it’s the hoodoos at Bryce Canyon National Park that really steal the show. Whether you stop at the viewpoints or hike deep into the canyon, you’re sure to find some incredible views.
Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park is massive, though many visitors choose to focus their time in the Island is the Skye Section. Whether hike or drive a 4×4 deep into the canyon, there’s so many fun and unique things to do.
Capitol Reef National Park
Originally this area was inhabited by Mormons, but now people visit Capitol Reef National Park for the red rock formations, incredible views, and great hikes.
Zion National Park
A true hiker’s paradise with miles and miles of great hiking trails, Zion National Park is packed full of beauty. Non-hikers can enjoy the scenery and the impressive feat of engineering that was the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway that takes you through the park.
Snow Canyon State Park
It’s so easy to focus on the national parks, but Utah’s State Parks are stunning and worth a visit. Snow Canyon State Park is home to some unique geological features as well as some stunning mountain views.
Top Experiences
Arches National Park – For some of the most iconic rock formations in the state, visit Arches National Park. Hike to Delicate Arch (which is the arch featured on Utah license plates) or to one of the many other arches dotted around this park.
Bryce Canyon National Park – This canyon is filled with iconic hoodoos, little spikes that stick up throughout the canyon. Drive the scenic drive and stop at the view points, but if you are able, hike down into the canyon to see these formations up close.
Canyonlands National Park – This massive national park is split into different sections and all are worth visiting. Whether you hike, take in some views, or drive the White Rim Road, you’re sure to have a great time.
Capitol Reef National Park – This park is quieter, but is absolutely worth a visit. From hikes to some of my favorite drives in Utah, it’s absolutely worth working Capitol Reef into your Utah itinerary.
Zion National Park – This popular park features amazing hikes and some breathtaking drives. Hike to Angel’s Landing, the Narrows, and so many other great hikes throughout the park. Plus, don’t forget to drive the phenomenal Mount Carmel Highway.
Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument – While it’s not a park, this monument is still part of the National Park System. This stunning landscape offers hiking and views to those who venture out.
Salt Lake City – I had to include one city on this list, so why not the most populous city in Utah. Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital, offers a city break, but still has plenty of nearby nature options.
Visit a State Park – So much of the focus in Utah seems to be on the national parks. They’re awesome, but don’t overlook the many state parks. You’ll often find some incredible scenery and fewer crowds than some of the national parks.
Itineraries
There’s no shortage of things to do in Utah. Use these itineraries as a starting point for your own trip planning.
Continue Your Adventure
If you have extra time, consider extending your trip to include a neighboring state. Arizona sits to the south and features the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and more. Colorado is to the east and is full of epic mountain views. To the west is Nevada where you’ll find Las Vegas and more outdoor adventures than you may first realize.
