Texas is massive and in order to really explore this state, you’ll need a lot of time. From its major cities such as Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio to its national parks, you’ll find a lot to do is this state. Plus you’ll find some amazing food.

Admittedly, I still have a lot of this state to explore. So far, I’ve only been to one small area of the state (although I had plans for San Antonio but a blizzard cancelled my flights and my trip), but I know that I have so much more to see.

A Five Day New Mexico National Park Road Trip (+ Texas)

Over the course of a long weekend, you can cross three national parks off your list. Start in New Mexico and visit White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks before heading to the hiking paradise of Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

When to Visit

Like most of the United States, Texas can be visited all year round, but there are some seasons that are better than others. Additionally, what you plan to do in Texas has an impact.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, expect high temperatures. If you plan to hike, this can make hiking dangerous so you’ll need to carry more water than normal.

Winter has cooler temperatures, although for those of us coming from northern areas with snow and ice, this may not be that cold to you.

I traveled to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in November and had great hiking weather.

Texas is a massive state and you could easily focus a trip solely on this state. However, when I visited Texas, I combined a visit to Guadalupe Mountains National Park with some time in New Mexico.
