South Dakota is a state with variety, but most visitors focus on the Badlands and the Black Hills. These are both very fun areas to explore, especially if you like hiking, scenic drives, and wildlife. You’ll find two national parks (Badlands and Wind Cave), as well as some national monuments (including Mount Rushmore and Jewel Cave). Plus, don’t miss some of the state parks, some are absolutely incredible.

Let’s plan your trip to South Dakota!

South Dakota 5 Day Itinerary: Badlands & The Black Hills

This itinerary covers the highlights of South Dakota in a short amount of time, making it perfect for a long weekend. Visit the Badlands, the Black Hills, two caves, Mount Rushmore, and even more. And if you have more time, I’ll give you options to extend it.

When to Visit

South Dakota can be visited all year round, but there are definitely some seasons that are better than others. Winters are cold and places like Custer State Park will close some of their roads during this time. So, I’d reconsider travel during this month.

Summers are peak travel time, when families across the United States take their big trips. You can expect warm weather and large numbers of tourists.

Spring and fall can offer a balance between decent weather and more manageable crowds. I visited in September and had excellent weather. And a friend who goes out to South Dakota on a very regular basis (in all seasons), told me that I had picked the best time of year to go. So, I’d really consider timing your visit to fall if you have the option.
