Things to Do On a Quick Visit to Congaree National Park

Congaree National Park may not be as famous as some other parks, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth a quick visit. This park is home to the largest collection of bottomland hardwood forest in the world and hiking through the forest can be interesting.

Washington DC to Savannah, GA – 10 Days on the US East Coast

Start: Washington, DC
End: Savannah, GA
Length: 10 Days

Starting in Washington DC, work your way south all the way to Savannah, GA, stopping at national parks and several interesting cities.

When to Visit

South Carolina can be visited all year round, but some seasons are better than others. In summers, expect it to be hot and sticky, particularly along the coast lines. In winter, it will be cooler, but for those coming from a colder climate, this may be ideal.

Keep in mind that hurricane season runs from late summer and into fall. If you’re traveling inland, this may be less of a concern, but particularly for those heading to Charleston and the coasts, it’s something to keep in mind.

I visited South Carolina (Congaree National Park and Charleston) in October. While the weather was nice on my visit, I did have to revise my entire trip a few days before departure. A hurricane hit Charleston the day we were supposed to arrive. Thankfully the hurricane didn’t do much damage, but it still affected my trip (as I had to reverse my Savannah, GA to Washington DC itinerary).

Nearby

South Carolina is a smaller state. While you could easily make a visit that focused just on South Carolina, consider combining it with a nearby state.

If you’re visiting Charleston, the historic city of Savannah is only a two hour drive away. If you don’t want to head south, head north to North Carolina.
