In January 2014, I started my study abroad at Ireland’s University of Limerick. Over the next four months, I toured a lot of the country, visiting most of the tourist hot spots. But there was nowhere quite as beautiful as the dramatic cliffs in western Ireland. Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher look beautiful in photos, but I’d argue they’re even more stunning in person.
The Cliffs of Moher are the most famous and this is where most travelers tend to focus. But the western coast of Ireland is filled with beautiful cliffs. Don’t limit yourself to just the famous Cliffs of Moher (but they’re definitely beautiful!). A friend and I joined a tour through our university and visited some cliffs near Kilkee. These were just as beautiful as the Cliffs of Moher, but our small group of twelve were the only people here.
There are loads of posts on the internet about how to visit the Cliffs of Moher, and many of those people have visited more recently than I have. So I don’t feel right giving in depth advice about how to visit the cliffs. Besides, if you have a rental car, it’s super easy to visit the Cliffs of Moher, as well as some lesser visited cliffs. If you don’t have a car, you can take a tour (I used Paddywagon Tours in 2014 and they still get good reviews today).
So, instead, this post will be a photo tour of the cliffs in western Ireland, featuring the Cliffs of Moher, lesser visited cliffs near Kilkee, and a bonus from the Aran Islands.
